The author tells us about his profession, the difficulties of daily life, the influence of Catholicism in the city, popular entertainment and leisure activities, the climate. But he also bears witness to great historical events, armed conflicts, and the transfer of the former provinces of the Spanish Netherlands to French sovereignty. He dislikes Louis XIV and his troops who prefer to reduce the peasants of Flanders and Hainault to poverty rather than save Vienna, besieged by the Turks. He is attentive to the doings and actions of the Prince of Orange in whom he secretly places his hopes.
