During the First World War, the Belgian Minister of Colonies Jules Renkin wrote a monthly report to keep King Albert I informed of the situation of the Congo, Belgium’s African colony. These previously unpublished and rarely consulted documents, part of the private papers of Gérard Cooreman, a Catholic politician (now kept at Kadoc in Leuven), give an excellent overview of the diplomatic, military and economic problems of the Congo during these turbulent years.
